Firstly thx for reading the article. I've ran the code in a notebook and loading the json file worked fine for me (see link).

However, it's important to note that the library is still in beta development status so bugs do appear from time to time.

If you want to create a balance sheet without importing a json you can also manually add the entries. This is quite a tedious process, but it get's the job done. I've also added this process to the notebook linked below.
